The easiest way to explain the difference is to compare the two in terms of 'housing'.
A Dedicated Server is like owning your own home. You're pretty much free to do what you want, how you want, and you have full control. A VPS hosting package is more like owning an apartment. You share certain resources with others, and you are governed by certain rules as to what you can and cannot do. I hope that is clear. WHN
